The standard is some strong oak or hickory well oiled cane, Rattan cane hits hard but not as hard as wood mentioned, rattan is grass, stronger than bamboo it will get the job done in self defense its twice as fast as wooden cane for self defense, Kabar metal cane is a very good quality cane but it costs a lot and is too heavy for most people, but it is the one that hits the hardest and is dangerous being so heavy and the crook used on a attacker could kill them in self defense with the Kabar cane.

Me my testimony is I use wood cane its oak and hickory other ones, and rattan one I own 2 they bend easy but they are FAST when hitting a target while the wood will break bones, rattan can but most say its too light to use for serious self defense, I say like teacher said, get both canes rattan and wood one. If you have the Kabar and its heavy too heavy but you prefer slow and devastation in blows then use that metal one! Make sure you train with it, don't freeze up during a self defense situation.
Rattan is durable and don't need oiled like wood canes and metal one is for people who don't want to have to maintain a wood cane with oil. Mineral oil is what you use. Rub it in with your hands and the cane will absorb the oil, you can use different kinda oils to soak them in the wood canes and fighting tonbo.Linseed oil.
