DID GOD REALLY CREATE EVERYTHING? Part Three — Can the Infinite Be Divided?

DID GOD REALLY CREATE EVERYTHING?

Part Three — Can the Infinite Be Divided?

By Reverend Michael Cook, D.Div.

One of the greatest mysteries that has occupied the minds of philosophers, mystics, theologians, and seekers throughout history is this:

Can the Infinite be divided?

At first, the answer seems obvious.

If something is truly infinite...

How can it ever be divided?

Yet every day we divide reality in our own minds.

We divide nations.

We divide people.

We divide ideas.

We divide religions.

We divide science and spirituality.

We divide heaven and earth.

We divide sacred and ordinary.

We divide "us" and "them."

The remarkable thing is that these divisions exist first within our thinking before they ever appear in the world around us.

Perhaps this tells us something profound.

Perhaps separation begins in the mind long before it appears in our actions.

Imagine standing beside the ocean.

Take a small glass and fill it with seawater.

Now ask yourself:

Did you remove the ocean?

Of course not.

You removed only a tiny portion.

Yet even within that small glass, the water still possesses the same essential nature as the ocean itself.

It is still salt water.

It still reflects the sunlight.

It still belongs to the greater whole.

The glass limits your experience of the ocean.

It does not limit the ocean itself.

Perhaps our understanding of God is much like that glass.

The Infinite remains Infinite.

Our understanding is what remains limited.

Throughout history people have often confused their understanding of God with God Himself.

We begin believing that our cup contains the entire ocean.

This is where pride quietly enters spiritual life.

The humble seeker says,

"This is what I presently understand."

The proud seeker says,

"This is all there is to understand."

The difference between these two attitudes determines whether we continue growing.

The Infinite never stops inviting us to grow.

Every new insight expands our horizon.

Every act of compassion enlarges our vision.

Every lesson in humility stretches the boundaries of our understanding.

Growth itself may be one of God's greatest gifts.

Many ancient traditions describe reality using symbols rather than literal definitions.

A circle...

A sphere...

A flame...

A river...

A tree...

Each symbol points toward something words struggle to explain.

A circle has no beginning.

No ending.

Every point is connected.

It reminds us that existence itself may be far more unified than our ordinary thinking suggests.

Likewise, a sphere has no true edges from its own perspective.

Wherever you stand upon its surface feels like the center.

Perhaps every soul experiences life in a similar way.

Each of us sees the world from where we stand.

Each of us believes our perspective is central.

Yet every perspective belongs to something much greater.

One of the great lessons of spiritual maturity is realizing that our perspective is genuine...

But not complete.

This realization changes everything.

Instead of arguing endlessly over who possesses the whole truth...

We begin sharing what we have learned.

Instead of defending our understanding as though it were perfect...

We begin learning from one another.

Truth does not become smaller when shared.

It becomes clearer.

Think about sunlight passing through a crystal.

One beam enters.

Many colors emerge.

Red.

Blue.

Green.

Gold.

Purple.

Each color is real.

Yet none of them alone contains the fullness of the original light.

Only together do they reveal something closer to its beauty.

Perhaps humanity resembles that crystal.

Each culture reflects something.

Each tradition preserves something.

Each generation discovers something.

None possesses everything.

Together we reveal more than we could alone.

This is why wisdom requires humility.

The Infinite cannot be exhausted by one lifetime.

Nor by one religion.

Nor by one philosopher.

Nor by one book.

Nor by one teacher.

If God is truly Infinite...

Then learning is eternal.

Wonder is eternal.

Discovery is eternal.

Perhaps heaven itself is not the end of learning...

But the beginning of learning without fear.

The greatest obstacle to wisdom has never been ignorance.

Ignorance can be taught.

The greatest obstacle is believing there is nothing left to learn.

When that happens...

Growth stops.

Curiosity dies.

Wonder disappears.

The human spirit becomes satisfied with a very small cup while forgetting the vast ocean that still awaits.

This is why every generation must continue asking questions.

Not because truth changes...

But because our understanding deepens.

The Infinite has never become smaller.

Our vision simply becomes larger.

So can the Infinite truly be divided?

No.

Only our understanding can be divided.

The Infinite remains whole.

It is we who gradually grow into a greater awareness of that wholeness.

The journey of the soul is not about making God larger.

It is about allowing our own hearts and minds to become large enough to receive more of the Infinite Light.

The ocean has never diminished.

The question is only this:

How much of it are we willing to explore?

In our next chapter we will examine one of the oldest and most challenging questions in theology:

If God is perfectly good...where does evil come from?

Until then...

Remain curious.

Remain humble.

Remain teachable.

For every sincere question expands the horizon of the soul.

Peace, Light, and Understanding to All.
