DID GOD REALLY CREATE EVERYTHING? Part One — The Question That Has Echoed Throughout History

DID GOD REALLY CREATE EVERYTHING?

Part One — The Question That Has Echoed Throughout History

By Reverend Michael Cook, D.Div.

There are certain questions that have followed humanity since the dawn of civilization.

They have been asked by kings and shepherds.

By philosophers and children.

By saints and skeptics.

By those standing in magnificent cathedrals and by those sitting alone beneath the stars.

One of those questions is perhaps the greatest of them all:

Did God really create everything?

At first glance, the answer appears simple.

Most people who believe in God would immediately answer,

"Yes."

After all, many sacred texts describe God as the Creator of heaven and earth, the source of all life, and the beginning of all things. If God is the Creator, then it seems reasonable to conclude that everything owes its existence to Him.

Yet another question quickly follows.

If God created everything...

Did God also create evil?

If God is perfectly loving...

Why does hatred exist?

Why does violence exist?

Why does disease exist?

Why does suffering exist?

These questions have challenged the greatest minds in history.

Some have answered by saying evil is a punishment.

Others have said it is the result of human freedom.

Still others have suggested that evil has no true existence of its own but is the absence or corruption of what is good, much as darkness is the absence of light rather than a thing in itself.

Throughout history, people have offered many answers.

Perhaps before we search for the answer, we should first ask whether we are asking the right question.

Maybe the deeper question is not,

"Did God create everything?"

Perhaps it is,

"What do we mean when we say 'God'?"

For many people, God is a king seated upon a heavenly throne.

For others, God is a loving Father.

Some understand God as Spirit.

Some speak of the Divine Presence.

Some call God the Source.

Others simply say,

The Infinite.

Still others speak of the All in All, expressing the idea that the Divine is not merely one being among many, but the very ground of all existence.

Different traditions use different names.

Different cultures use different symbols.

Yet each is reaching toward something greater than words can fully describe.

The difficulty is that human language is finite.

The Divine, by its very nature, is understood by many believers to be beyond all limitation.

How then can finite words completely describe the Infinite?

Perhaps they cannot.

Instead, every description becomes a window.

No single window shows the entire landscape.

Each reveals only a portion of the view.

This may explain why sincere people often disagree about God while honestly seeking the same truth.

Some emphasize God's justice.

Others emphasize God's mercy.

Some focus upon God's transcendence.

Others upon God's nearness.

Each perspective reveals something valuable.

Yet none can completely exhaust the mystery.

This is why humility is so important in spiritual life.

The moment we believe we have completely understood God, we have probably begun worshiping our own understanding rather than the Infinite itself.

The greatest teachers throughout history often possessed one quality in common.

They remained teachable.

They continued asking questions.

They continued seeking wisdom.

Not because they doubted the existence of God...

But because they understood that infinite truth can never be fully contained within a finite mind.

As our understanding grows, our image of God often grows with it.

The God of a child differs from the God understood by a mature adult.

Neither is necessarily wrong.

One is simply incomplete.

Growth is one of life's greatest teachers.

As we grow in compassion, our understanding of God often becomes more compassionate.

As we grow in wisdom, our understanding of God often becomes wiser.

As we mature, we begin discovering that many of the questions we once demanded simple answers to are invitations into deeper reflection.

Perhaps this is one of them.

Instead of asking,

"Did God create everything?"

Perhaps we should begin by asking,

"Who is God?"

Because how we answer that question will shape every other answer that follows.

This series is not intended to convince anyone to abandon their faith or accept a particular theological system.

Its purpose is much simpler.

It is an invitation to think.

To reflect.

To question honestly.

To seek wisdom with humility.

And above all...

To remain open to the possibility that the Infinite may be greater than any single description we have ever given.

Our journey has only begun.

In the next chapter, we will explore one of humanity's oldest ideas:

Can the Infinite truly be understood through finite minds?

Until then, continue seeking truth—not with fear, but with humility, compassion, and an open heart.

For every sincere question is another step along the path of wisdom.

Peace, Light, and Understanding to All.
