The truth about 410 revolver hand gun rounds Sabot Designs LLC
Federal Premium .410 Handgun 000 Buckshot is the absolute best Self-Defense ammunition for the Taurus Judge, Smith & Wesson Governor, Magnum Research BFR, and any other .410 handguns on the market. PERIOD. And Sabot Designs' special 410 rounds that are good as well. The Sabot Designs LLC is 410 2-1/2" 7 8 grain flechettes which each flechette has about same stopping power as 9mm pistol cartridge and there is 7 of them energy wise , based on energy signature, it has energies of 7 9mm pistol rounds hitting all at once with the Sabot Design LLC flechettes. But if you cannot get flechettes from them or prefer buckshot like I do , this post is about Federal 410 Premium 410 handgun 2-1/2" 000 triple aught buck shot ammo more so...
Yes, it's expensive and yes, it can be hard to find, but that's because it really is the best 410 shells available. Other .410 handgun loads such as the Winchester PDX1 Defender and Hornady Triple Defense ammo is gimmicky, inaccurate, and largely ineffective, only a bit better than ordinary .410 Shotgun Ammo.
The Taurus Judge and S&W Governor are specialty handguns which require specialized ammunition designed specifically for short barrels to be effective, otherwise they're just range play toys. Unfortunately, cheapskates don't understand this and are adamant that any firearm which doesn't perform well with bargain basement ammo is junk, so if you subscribe to the same ideology, then I strongly suggest that you cut your losses and sell your Governor immediately, then console yourself by joining the ranks of those who denigrate .410 Revolvers at every available opportunity because I can tell you based on personal experience that cheap run-of-the-mill .410 ammo is going to perform terribly out of a handgun.
Still with me? Very good then, sorry for being short about this, but I've owned a Taurus Judge for the past 3 years, so I know what works, but folks always choose to ignore my advice and then complain when it doesn't work out for them.
Federal Premium .410 Handgun 000 Buck is perfect for Self-Defense with a .410 Revolver because it just plain works. Federal did their homework and came out with a winner because instead of trying to make some gimmicky load for the gun with plated discs or .41 caliber slugs which predictably tumble out of the barrel resulting in abysmal accuracy, they simply adapted their proven Flight Control design to .410 Bore, then used faster-burning powders to achieve optimal velocity out of a short barrel. As such, Federal .410 Handgun 000 Buck utilizes a scaled-down variant of the Flight Control wad which prevents the shot from coming into contact with the barrel's rifling and the shot is copper-plated so it doesn't deform inside of the shot cup under recoil, which in turn helps the shot to maintain a tighter group as well as greater accuracy in flight.
To the best of my knowledge, no other .410 ammo does this, which is why it other ammos tends to perform so terribly when tested. Unfortunately, most ammo companies made their ammo solely for the purpose of capitalizing on the popularity of .410 Handguns, ergo they really didn't try to design optimal loads for .410 Handguns, they just made something with a gimmick that sounds good on paper like goofy mixed shot loads with plated discs, shot, and/or slugs combined within the same shell. Meanwhile, common sense dictates that if there were any merit to such designs, then obviously they would have also been offered in 20 Gauge and 12 Gauge loads as well, yet they were not. Wanna know why? Because they are useless gimmicks.
So yeah, although this whole post may have come out reading like a clumsily constructed sales pitch for Federal ammo, it's just because they simply offer the very best load for .410 Handguns. I'm not a Federal Fan, in fact my favorite defensive loads for all my other handguns is made by Hornady.
But hey, don't take my word for it. There are no shortage of .410 Ammo Tests out of a Taurus Judge or S&W Governor on YouTube, (honorable mention to ShootingtheBull410) for providing some of the most fair, unbiased ammo tests available) so I strongly encourage you to check them out.
Sabot Designs LLC 410 2-1/2" 7 Flechettes shot gun shell review
I tested ONE Sabot Designs LLC 410 2-1/2" 7 Flechette shot gun round with 8 inches of phone books, the sabot with flechettes packed 7 of them inside went half way into the phone book 4 inches in but there was no 7 flechettes anywhere to be found, I shot it under 10 feet with a 4 1/2" -inch barrel 45 Colt/410 Bore subcaliber device for 26.5 mm Flare gun barrel. It had two inches from 410 flechette shot shell of 410 2-1/2" flechette load to end of barrel so it should of patterned better than the review I read about the American Derringers.
Let me tell you this much, they are not a joke the plastic sabot shot half way through a phone book 4" and no darts or holes were found no exit holes is a mystery. Its like they scattered from before it hit, another person Jim Dickson fired these rounds from a Derringer barrel with only 1/2 inch to end left and the writer in that review said from derringer it patterned at 10 feet 5.5" on target, one I shot no flechettes hit the mark just the sabot.
Personally, they are high quality rounds from Sabot Designs LLC but when shot from a device like mine the flare gun could of messed up darts/flechettes the 7 as they exited subcaliber gun barrel then 2 more inches of the flare gun barrel but I am not sure 100%. here and I am not saying these rounds are not good no they are good really only flechette 410 round out there that the flechettes are packed into special sabot as there is nothing on market like these Sabot Design LLC flechettes for .410 and 12 Gauge rounds, anyone else's stay away from!! stay with Sabot Designs LLC brand.
The flechettes are not junk they are high quality and would of hit super hard like each flechette is same as 9mm Luger round each one based on energy signature. They have no recoil hardly at all. Its the only flechette maker I recommend for 12 gauge rifles and 410 bore shot guns/pistols. Anything else is junk Sabot Designs LLC has MUCH better flechettes then any of them no good rounds that all these vendors sell with military surplus junk as they will screw up your barrel the flechettes but Sabot in Sabot designs LLC load protects your barrel from flechettes.
I am going to re-test this round again and see if flechettes did hit target or not they should have as sabot they was packed in to protect your shot gun barrel or pistol barrel from flechettes is only thing I found buried in middle of phone book. They of course would work better from full sized shot gun or 410 bore with shot gun barrel but another person Jim Dickson tested these rounds from derringers and they were very effective as he put it, like getting hit with energy of 7 9mm Luger pistol rounds all at once. That much is true they have energy of 9mm for a plastic sabot to enter phone book 4" in but where did the flechettes go? I cannot figure it out. I highly recommend their flechette rounds here is their website https://sabotdesigns.com
03/29/2025: UPDATE , I did a second test at 10ft, the darts/flechettes hit within 4-5 inches at 15 feet distance. There was 7 holes placed there and a big hole where sabot they were packed in, they hit with power of 9mm round. Energy signature is same as a 9 mm Luger which means flechettes have same energy as 9mm bullet each of 7 flechettes In these shells by Sabot Designs LLC

410 0000 4 Aught 2-1/2" ..there's 4 .78 grain .375 diameter pellets in review
Paraclese Technologies has this ammo 410 0000 buckshot ultra buck. It packs a PUNCH and stays close together in grouping from 2 inch barrel I used, out to 50 feet, each one hit target at 1025 FPS with 726 ft lbs of energy making this the power of a 38 special each balls each one same penetration and energy dump and some mushrooming happened as .38 Special/.380 ACP. They penetrate 5-6 water jugs each ball/buck shot. This stuff is called Ultrabuck buckshot,.410 Bore Gauge 2-1/2". They got 3 " version of this as well....These pellets I cannot resay this enough, these pattern ALOT BETTER than any other ammo on market besides Federal Premium 410 bore 2-1/2" 000 triple aught buckshot which is a very popular cartridge for self defense for car and bed room... Up close personal self defense whether Federal or the 0000 buckshot here I am writing about, these and Federal are best .410 Bore ammo you can use for effectiveness.
You can get this ammo at store below:
